Some specific vacation plans or trip.

March - Vegas
I made it to Vegas for my 8th year in a row. It is still a lot of fun because the city is always changing. Here is a video of the Bellagio water show. I've been thinking about planning one for the past couple years with my Dad and brothers. The weather didn't allow us to sail over, so we took the ferry and stayed in the harbor. Here is a picture of our cabin on the water. We also managed to see some houses that were in our family in the 1830's.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-djaukVWzMlI/TuaxLD3q_VI/AAAAAAAAAqM/zNcmU9mg7eM/s400/photo%252880%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685426383177317714" />
July - France
My friends took an assignment in France so they offered to host me for my trip and we took some great day trips. It was a really good movie that I think is being hurt by a bad release date. Coming out around Halloween, it only had 1 showing by me due to Twilight. So far it cost $40 Mil to make and has only made $30 Mil.
I won't ruin any of the story, but it is clearly making a broader social commentary that sticks with you after the movie.
The only downside is that now the costar, Amanda Seyfried, won't stop calling me :)Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-49609359423323681742011-10-23T17:47:00.000-07:002011-10-23T18:10:25.725-07:00The 4D CameraThis could be my next camera.

Here is what they have to say:
"I’ve always wanted to just be able to snap a picture whenever I wanted to, without having my friends freeze their smiles on their faces until the focus was complete. And now, that’s a possibility. The new Lytro pocket-sized cameras let you snap pictures whenever you want, letting you focus on whatever you want, later.
http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif
How it works, you wonder. Well, apparently the Lytro camera captures all the light rays flowing in its direction, an average of about 11 million, and captures the scene in “four dimensions”, unlike any other camera out there.

So, you, or someone else you share you picture with will be able to refocus and explore the entire scene from different vantage points after you’ve already taken the photo."

Here is an example to play with. Click on any part of the image to refocus.Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-62787467827910997412011-08-09T20:46:00.000-07:002011-08-09T20:53:15.379-07:00Great Commercial

We did not get enough WWI history in school, we skipped right to WWII.
2. The sites, even 100 years later are very powerful and very sad.
3. The scope and amount of destruction is unbelievable.
4. There was no skill that could possibly increase your chances of living, it was pure random luck where the millions of bombs fell.
5. It amazes me how well they care for the cemeteries on a daily basis, and how integrated all of them are for French and German soldiers. It is really like the horror of war transcended which side you happened to be on.
6. We all agreed that we could not imagine modern society giving the same degree of sacrifice and dedication.

Near Amiens we came across a monument dedicated to the first place the US entered WWI to help the French. While there, we met a man who was trimming the hedges around the monument. My friend started talking to him about the site, and next thing I know he told us he was going to open the museum for us to see.
In hindsight, I did not get enough pictures to do this justice, however by museum it was his garage with his car parked in it and around it was tables of artifacts.
He had pictures of Eisenhower coming to visit the site.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0dKsTkHBHE0/TiMT3Ino-sI/AAAAAAAAAmg/HElCJ5WKJB8/s400/photo%252849%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630365797070731970" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sd-0THjwaDg/TiMT3WuBOLI/AAAAAAAAAmo/Ymo2H8kvPyM/s400/photo%252850%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630365800855582898" />
He had all kinds of things found in the fields around here.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b3Va73d10o4/TiMT3RJflvI/AAAAAAAAAmw/yty8KOhAD2Q/s400/photo%252851%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630365799360206578" />
Yes, these are WWI unexploded ordinances at the front of his car in the garage.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Hy1pY5RaXIQ/TiMT3npPrEI/AAAAAAAAAm4/y2UOjQFlVJ4/s400/photo%252852%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630365805398961218" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3uDQBasT4W0/TiMT3tPzcVI/AAAAAAAAAnA/MV91N5vIL-s/s400/photo%252853%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630365806902866258" />
Here is a nearby cemetery, the white crosses are French and each Gray cross is 2 Germans. Nearly 2/3 of all French WWI soldiers saw time at Verdun as they had to keep rotating troops to keep moral high due to the high kill rates in Verdun.
We went to the museum which had a movie, many of the soldiers wrote that the land looks like the moon, like they were already in hell and they could never imagine anything ever growing here again.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jW7GA3LYXQw/TiMUH0CUxsI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/KmUQHURckoo/s400/photo%252855%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630366083603285698" />
Everything today looks like golf bunkers due to the amount of exploded shells here. So to house it, they built the largest Gothic structure every built. The head is not always on display but I was able to see it.
The Cathedral was originally painted, so at night they do a light show to restore the original color. The light show is amazing in its detail and precision.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-avl_QKiDTZg/TiIyevsx92I/AAAAAAAAAjw/UzZxHdFiaoM/s400/photo%252833%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630117987948296034" />
This cathedral is a monster in a modern city, I can only imagine what it would have looked like on the horizon of these farm 800 years ago!
From Inside: It is significantly taller than I had expected.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sheakzDIyvE/TiIssBAYSuI/AAAAAAAAAjQ/gBbLGdwLiLk/s400/photo%252829%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5630111618862435042" />
The pictures do not do justice to how amazing the original stained glass looks. Yes!

Notre Dame (Better at night with fire throwing street performers.
I am now a Cathedral expert and will share some interesting commentary about the carvings when I cover the Amiens Cathedral:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cyFtPUskBsk/ThuCObS9bzI/AAAAAAAAAh0/O6S9a6_nud0/s400/photo%252819%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628235343686627122" />
Louvre:
When I landed it was Free Museum Sunday! Who doesn't love that? Apparently...no one on the planet causing such a huge Disney line that I didn't attempt it. The Bucket List Fodder to time ratio wasn't correct.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hEbrnSmLp9c/ThuCOu-scUI/AAAAAAAAAh8/qceeYu9NOJA/s400/photo%252820%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628235348970336578" />
The Impressionists Museum
I decided if I was going to wait in line it would be for the Impressionists.
Here is a huge picture of the line around the block. I estimated it would be over an hour. I was behind a family from Australia with their 5 yr old daughter, they flew 24 hrs to get to Paris. About 10 mins in security came and pulled them aside to the much shorter "Family with a small child" line...and ME since I looked like their Australian son for the day. I would later learn there is no sense of equality for everyone in France. So subjective treatment, we would see as unfair, does not apply. Another 10 mins and we were IN!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DQjHGUFIz58/ThuCO5HiWEI/AAAAAAAAAiE/RdrLPjaIWCg/s400/photo%252821%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628235351691778114" />
It's bigger than I thought, Kings Island has nothing on this Monster.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G3gcuiR_QHc/ThuCPE3ErbI/AAAAAAAAAiM/MJGkity_L20/s400/photo%252822%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628235354843950514" />
If my French was better I would have explained to the mobs of tourists that Paul Revere delivered the Eiffel Tour to France to warn the French Canadians that they weren't going to take their guns. I'll start with Meghan's request to get pictures of all the food I had. I did forget at times, and one place was too fancy to take out a camera...until after a bottle of wine and we closed it down so I got dessert pictures. Notice my inside joke where I tried to sneak in a coke or Pepsi glass into most pictures.

4 Cheese Pizza (Goat, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella, Parmesan)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TC1c6LIy1Yo/Thmn7kUsb_I/AAAAAAAAAf8/F_IXE2kTilw/s400/photo%252811%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627713851180740594" />
Desserts
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-01JmmZYJXxs/Thmn7QXJXsI/AAAAAAAAAf0/2JnBPloFHzo/s400/photo%252810%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627713845822316226" />
Layers of chocolate:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9zg0NN4PY5c/Thmn7AI9jXI/AAAAAAAAAfs/UN_hwhJ46CM/s400/photo%25289%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627713841467854194" />
Crepe:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TO567WPIn0Q/Thms2lg1aMI/AAAAAAAAAgs/Ne-kVRinLsc/s400/photo%252817%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627719263158888642" />
This was the fancy 400 year old restaurant. The wind killed my tulips but no major damage.

This past Fri night at 1:30am, I woke up to some serious thunder and lightning. Lucy gets nervous, so I was checking the radar on my iPhone and saw the image below (you do not want to be the red pin).
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7Rvspmd1GLA/TbQ_w4AS24I/AAAAAAAAAdA/MpTscntpCfo/s400/photo%2B1.PNG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599170345628261250" />
Then at 1:45 am, a huge lightning bolt struck very close by and it felt like the entire house jumped. My security alarm and everything went crazy, so I thought for sure me or my neighbor had been hit by lightning. I stayed up for a bit incase a fire started. Things that did not work at the time included, the phone, all lights and ceiling fans that touched the attic. And my sump pump, which I spent most of my time on that night with all the water we had.

After checking things out and no fire I went to bed around 3am. I had reasoned that the lightning must have hit close and traveled in through my phone line since most downstairs light and TVs etc still worked.

I woke up around 9am to look around in the daylight, I was drawn to my guest bedroom to find this in the wall above my window.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yqbtiNGLxEE/TbQ_3PJoCQI/AAAAAAAAAdI/JDnwFGIDeaU/s400/photo%2B2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599170454920628482" />
And it looked like I hulked out in my sleep and pulled my window frame apart!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FTAzriqIZek/TbRAAUF7MLI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/S2KdJdL-v7k/s400/photo%2B3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599170610866106546" />

So I was directly hit by lighting at the peak of my roof above my garage. The bolt came down popping out the wood, it's hard to see unless you zoom in but parts of the bricks are missing, it shot them out like buckshot into my neighbors siding. They never seem to let their cats outside, so I would follow the same routine with Benson. But after some deep discussions with him and some experimenting, I have come to the conclusion that he might like to spend some time outside!
I would have hoped someone would have mentioned this possibility to me before now.

Here are some videos showing how much he likes being outdoors.
He Loves It!

Off he goes...

And it tires him out...
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-15753103093246705922011-04-04T19:25:00.000-07:002011-04-04T19:35:26.688-07:00AnimalsTo Tom, who needs 2 cats when your one is this busy!

But he does like to relax, notice the curled back paws.
<img style="display:block; However, I do use it as an excuse to buy myself something I'd like but don't really need. If you know me, you know I never buy things and would hate to be caught in a mall on the weekend. Which is why I found myself wearing some sweaters this winter that I know were bought during my one shopping spree in 2003.

A few years ago, I bought myself a hand held planetarium, which I really enjoy.

Last year you could say I used some of my return for an iPad, but that decision was made as soon as it was announced. And I have enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Especially if you have lap dogs and lap cats, you can still browse while they are being needy.

Not sure what I will do this year, although I did just go on my annual (or less frequent) shopping spree with Meghan. It started as a few shirts for my Vegas trip and ended up with stuff for work, running, etc.
I did buy a new cologne. For the past couple years as I work more with perfumes at work I have been interested in finding a new cologne. I don't think my array of Old Spice White Water or Body Sprays truly counts.
After smelling and spraying the entire isle, I chose Swiss Army Mountain Water. Aside from smelling good, the whole water bottle container looks hilarious.
Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-86804146289792311322011-02-12T20:06:00.000-08:002011-02-12T20:18:59.357-08:00Number 4I have recently purchased my 4th VW.
1. 1980 VW Rabbit Diesel (1994)
2. 1998 VW Jetta (1998)
3. 2004 VW Passat (2004)
4. 2010 VW Touareg (2011)

That's currently over 135,000 miles driven in VWs.
There was also 2 years from 1996-1998 where I drove a Pontiac Bonneville.
This is my first Automatic VW so I am getting used to that, but a heated steering wheel is helping me move on.
It will be great for trips and taking Lucy around town.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0pvNarrmm5o/TVdZ2an0C_I/AAAAAAAAAbw/N_vXejfGsEU/s400/Car2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573021855288396786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3a-56Gsfloc/TVdZyPCJ9VI/AAAAAAAAAbo/UfO45jTonWA/s400/Car1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5573021783458182482" />Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-23139365567308088482011-01-29T17:47:00.000-08:002011-01-29T17:52:46.081-08:00MartiansI forgot how good these were about 30 years ago...

Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08879215582210633779noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2793604774540111803.post-21721648277885855672010-11-27T13:43:00.000-08:002010-11-27T14:09:12.836-08:00Lucy's BoyfriendLucy has a new boyfriend on the street. I probably stopped around Play Station 2 and Guitar Hero (aside from beating Tom in Wii Tennis over the Holidays).
Karen's parents got me a Barnes and Noble gift certificate for my birthday.
I do enjoy reading, but I spend a lot of time in the car so I like books on CD too. I did see a tempting book on 1,000 games to play before you die. I used the gift certificate to buy a book on CD Dewey Readmore Books

Dewey Readmore Books (aka Dewey) (November 1987-November 29, 2006) was the library cat at the Spencer Public Library in Spencer, Iowa, United States.
